FAQ
DIRFloortime® can help children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, anxiety, developmental delays, or emotional and behavioral challenges, as well as those who just need extra support in connecting, communicating, or regulating their emotions. Families often reach out when they notice their child:
- Has a hard time managing big feelings or calming down after getting upset
- Struggles to connect, play, or communicate with others
- Becomes easily overwhelmed by sounds, textures, or changes in routine
- Has trouble focusing, transitioning, or staying flexible
- Seems “stuck” developmentally, or their progress has plateaued
- Shows bursts of creativity or intelligence, but has difficulty using those strengths in daily life
DIRFloortime® is a framework that can be used across the lifespan. The approach adapts beautifully for toddlers, school-aged children, and even teens and adults, because meaningful connection and regulation are always part of development.
At Puzzle Pieces, we specialize in supporting children aged roughly 12 and under through our developmental, play-based model. Our clinicians tailor DIRFloortime® strategies to each child’s age, interests, and stage of growth.
Every child’s journey is unique, and so is the length of therapy. Because DIRFloortime® focuses on deep developmental growth rather than surface-level behavior change, progress unfolds gradually and meaningfully over time.
Some children make significant gains in just a few months, while others benefit from ongoing support across different developmental stages. The pace depends on many factors, including your child’s individual profile, goals, family involvement, and how often sessions occur.
Our team will partner with you from the start to set realistic goals and check in regularly about your child’s progress. Many families find that as they begin to use DIRFloortime® strategies at home, growth accelerates both in sessions and in everyday life.
Parent and caregiver participation is a key part of DIRFloortime®. Some families enjoy being directly involved in sessions, learning alongside their child, and practicing strategies in real time. Others prefer to observe or join at the end for reflection and guidance.
Many of our families also participate in family or parent-only sessions (without the child present). These meetings provide a private space to talk through challenges, better understand what’s driving certain behaviors, and learn new strategies to support your child’s growth at home without little ears listening in.
